Deprived Citizen Hemo-Dialysis Service

Hemodialysis at Manmohan Memorial Medical College and Teaching Hospital

What is Hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis is a treatment designed to filter waste and excess fluid from the blood, replicating the functions of healthy kidneys. It helps manage the blood pressure and balance essential minerals like potassium, sodium, and calcium in the blood. While it significantly improves the well-being and extends life, it is important to understand that it does not cure kidney failure.

What to Expect During Hemodialysis?

During the hemodialysis sessions, blood is routed through an external filter known as a dialyzer, or “artificial kidney.” A dialysis nurse or technician will insert two needles into arm at the beginning of each treatment.

If the needle insertion is uncomfortable, patient can request a numbing cream or spray to ease the process. Each needle is connected to a soft tube that links to the dialysis machine, which then pumps the blood through the dialyzer to eliminate waste and excess fluid.

Typically, the patient will need to undergo hemodialysis two to three times a week. Each session lasts about four hours.
